The India Cabinet approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) on January 4, 2023, with a planned expenditure of Rs 1,974.4 billion (RMB 171 billion). The overall objective of the mission is to make India a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, with a target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030.

The following components have been announced as part of the mission:

- Promote demand creation through exports and domestic utilization;

- The Green Hydrogen Transition Strategic Intervention (SIGHT) program, which includes incentives for electrolyzer manufacturing and green hydrogen production;

- Pilot projects in steel, transportation, shipping, distributed energy applications, biomass hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, etc.;

- Development of green hydrogen hubs;

- Supporting infrastructure development;

- Establish strong regulatory frameworks and standards;

- Research & Development programmes, including R&D and skills development programmes through the Public-Private Partnership Framework;

- and public awareness and outreach programs.

India's National Green Hydrogen Mission spent Rs 6 billion (520 million yuan) under various projects in FY 2024-25.

The envisaged green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 could leverage more than 80 trillion rupees (2.9 trillion yuan) in the total investment in the green hydrogen industry. This investment is expected to create 600,000 jobs by 2030.

Green hydrogen has the potential to replace the use of imported fossil fuels in various sectors such as fertilizer production, petroleum refining, transportation, steel production and ship propulsion applications.

The mission is expected to cumulatively reduce fossil fuel imports worth 10 trillion rupees (86.59 million yuan) by 2030.

This information was given by India's Minister of New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today, July 30.
